To sleep or not to sleep…. that is a very important question. We all know that if we put everyone under general anesthesia, we would achieve 100% cooperation. But it is not as easy as that. There are multiple layers of difficulties in trying to access care for patients with special needs. Is the dentist comfortable treating the patient? Does the dentist have experience with managing patients under moderate sedation or general anesthesia? Does the dentist practice in an area that has access to anesthesia services – if needed? Is the patient appropriate for in-office anesthesia care? What are some other options? These are all questions that must be answered prior to treating a patient. This talk will attempt to answer some of these questions in trying to decide how to best manage the patient.
